FROM STORY TO ACTION

DISPLACED was born from FairSay Films’ co-founder Tiffany Hodges' experience volunteering with New Sanctuary Coalition and accompanying undocumented immigrants to court at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City. But the reality that inspired it has only become more urgent.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW

For immigrants, going to court and doing the “right thing”, can now mean risking detention. A federal judge found that the government had no legal justification for this, yet it continues to happen daily. You can read an article about it here. And learn more below.

  • Most undocumented Immigrants pay federal, local, and state income taxes. Over the last decade, they have paid $100 billion dollars into Social Security without ever being able to receive those benefits. (CNN & The Social Security Administration)

  • Undocumented immigrants are strictly barred by federal law from receiving major means-tested welfare benefits, including SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, SSI, and Social Security. Even most legal immigrants with green cards must wait a minimum of five years before they can even qualify to apply for these basic assistance programs (American Immigration Council)

A statewide coalition working to protect immigrant rights and expand access to legal services, representation, and other essential resources.

RAICES — Nationwide
Provides legal services and social support to immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. Offers a national volunteer program.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. SHARE THEM.

Learn what immigrants and their families should know and share that information with your community.

  • You have the right to remain silent. You don't have to answer questions about your immigration status.

  • If ICE comes to your home, keep the door closed. Ask to see a warrant signed by a judge before allowing them inside. An ICE administrative warrant does not give agents permission to enter your home without your consent.

  • If you are detained, don't sign anything or make decisions about your case without speaking to a lawyer first.
